The short answer? There isn't a magic week. Every pregnancy, and every body, is different. What matters isn't how many weeks pregnant you are. It's how your clothes make you feel.
We know from experience that most women buy their first pair of pregnancy jeans somewhere between 12 and 18 weeks, when their bump starts to grow, and their regular jeans start feeling less comfortable. But there's plenty of exceptions. You may want to wear pregnancy jeans earlier if:
- it's not your first pregnancy. Bumps tend to grow (and show) sooner if it's your second (or third, or fourth) time around.
- you're expecting twins. Your bump won't be double the size, but it will probably start showing a bit earlier. (And yes, our jeans are twin pregnancy-proof!)
- you're experiencing bloating in the first trimester. Totally normal, but it can cause your normal jeans to feel uncomfortable.
- you normally wear jeans that fit tight. Of course it also depends on the fit and the sizing preferences of your normal jeans when they start to feel too tight.
Switching to pregnancy jeans isn't about "giving in." It's about dressing the body you have today, so you can stay comfortable while continuing to wear clothes that feel like you. If you're constantly unbuttoning your jeans in the car, changing into leggings the moment you get home, or avoiding your favourite denim because it feels restrictive, your body is already telling you something. Comfort is a much better indicator than the number of weeks you're pregnant.
The key takeaway? Forget the calendar. Listen to your body.
5 Signs it's time to switch to pregnancy jeans
1. You unbutton your jeans whenever you sit down
You sit in the car. At your desk. On the sofa. And the first thing you do is secretly pop open that button. Many women even use a hair elastic for a while, and while these tricks can buy you a little extra time, they're usually a sign that your jeans no longer fit the way they should.
A well-designed pair of pregnancy jeans should allow you to sit, bend and move comfortably without ever needing to think about your waistband.
2. Your jeans feel tight, even if the zipper still closes up
Fit isn't just about whether or not you can close your zipper or your button. It's about feeling comfortable, even after some hours of wearing. If you're experiencing pressure on your lower abdomen, find yourself feeling relieved to unzip those jeans when you use the bathroom, or can't wait to take off your jeans once you get home: that's not what comfort should feel like.
Your body is changing every week. Clothes that worked two weeks ago may suddenly feel completely different.
3. You're suddenly living in leggings
Even though you're not a 'legging person'. Yes, leggings are wonderfully comfortable, but if you've stopped wearing jeans for the wrong reasons, it might be time to replace those denims for a fitting pair during this stage of your life, rather than giving up on denim altogether.
A good pair of maternity jeans combine the look of your favorite everyday denim with the comfort of a legging. Actually, quite literally, because the elastic belly band of our jeans is made of high quality elastic material that is inspired by luxury yoga leggings.
4. Your bump is growing, even if it's still small
Many women wait until they have a visibly round bump before considering maternity clothes. In reality, comfort often changes before your body visibly does. Hormonal changes can make your abdomen more sensitive in the first trimester. Bloating can make regular waistbands feel surprisingly restrictive. That's completely normal.
You don't need a prominent baby bump before you're "allowed" to wear pregnancy jeans. If they're more comfortable today, that's reason enough.
5. You don't enjoy getting dressed anymore
Getting dressed shouldn't feel frustrating. Yet many women reach a point where nothing in their wardrobe feels quite right. Your regular jeans are uncomfortable, but your pregnancy wardrobe hasn't started yet. And every morning, getting dressed becomes a struggle.
One great pair has a way of making the rest of your wardrobe work again. Suddenly, getting dressed feels easy, and even fun, again.
So why do so many women wait so long before getting that first pair of pregnancy jeans?
If you've been putting off buying maternity clothes, you're certainly not alone. In fact, many women wait longer than they need to, not because they aren't uncomfortable, but because they feel they should wait. Here's some of the most heard reasons.
"I'm not pregnant enough yet."
Perhaps your bump is still small. Maybe only you notice the difference. Or perhaps you're only 11 or 12 weeks pregnant and feel like maternity clothes are something for "later."
The truth is, pregnancy jeans aren't designed for a certain week. They're designed for a changing body. If your regular waistband no longer feels comfortable, you're exactly the person they're made for.
"I'll just make it another few weeks."
Sure, you can do that. The question is: why? Pregnancy is already full of physical changes. If changing one item in your wardrobe makes everyday life more comfortable, there's little reason to wait.
Many Atelier Melon customers tell us the same thing after buying their first pair: "I wish I'd bought these sooner." It's one of the reviews we hear most often.
"I don't want to spend money on clothes I'll only wear for a few months."
This is probably the biggest hesitation. And it's understandable. No one wants to buy an entirely new wardrobe for such a short period. That's exactly why investing in one or two excellent pairs often makes more sense than buying a new wardrobe filled with cheaper alternatives.
A high-quality pair of pregnancy jeans quickly becomes the pair you reach for every morning. Instead of rotating between multiple trousers that never fit quite right, one of two great pairs carry you through your pregnancy.
Many women continue wearing them in the first weeks, or even months, after giving birth too, when comfort is still a priority and your pre-pregnancy jeans may not fit just yet.
Bottom line: when is the right time? Anytime.
Not when you reach a certain week. Not when your bump looks a certain size. And certainly not when you can't button your jeans anymore. Whether that moment is at 10 weeks or 24 weeks doesn't matter.
Your wardrobe should support your pregnancy, not the other way around.
And if there's one thing we hear time and time again from women who've made the switch, it's this: "I only wish I'd bought them sooner."
